Private Verdes Home Art Tour: Shellie Rosser & Milton Slepkow

  • Rio Verde Community Center (map)

Meet Up Location: Rio Verde Community Center*

Explore Abstract Expressionism, Modern Abstract Landscape, Portraiture and more.

Written by Shellie Rosser: Early 1950’s New York City a young abstract expressionist caught the eye of Betty Parsons and Hans Hofmann. You haven’t heard of him because an unplanned pregnancy (me!) constrained his artistic freedom by necessitating a salary. His name was Alvin Rosser.

He continued painting when he could and exhibited in many NYC galleries (Roko, Ward Eggleston, Koltnow, Caravan, New York City Center Gallery, et al.). He studied at night with Hans Hofmann (Lee Krasner a classmate there) and worked by day as a visual presentation artist for Mutual Broadcasting Company. Later, he gravitated to teaching, which gave him more studio time in the summers and he explored many artistic paths in landscape, portraiture, cartooning, sculpture, watercolor, life drawing, and of all things, carving ventriloquist dummies.

Many of Rosser’s works are at the core of my collection, which has been augmented over the years with pieces by friends (including Scott Bennett of Syracuse NY, who studied under Al) and acquired in travels, galleries and auctions.

I think you will find this collection both eclectic and amusing, and look forward to hosting you in my Tonto Verde home. Light refreshments will be served as small groups cycle through the tiny gallery.
