Private Verdes Home Art Tour: Frank and Judy Haggard

Meet Up Location: Rio Verde Community Center*

Sign-Up Required before December 4th. Limited to 15 participants.

Experience Monumentality Prints, Abstract Expression & Fabric and Sculpture.

Frank and Judy Haggard have lived in Rio Verde for twenty years. Frank’s interest in art began sixty years ago during his graduate work in English. It was initially focused on small, signed, limited-edition, realistic prints; later, that interest came to include abstract work, with an occasional foray into contemporary fabric sculpture, glass, and ceramics. Without Judy’s support, participation, and occasional tolerance during the last fifty years, what we now live with could not have happened. Some of the prints were done by academic colleagues, occasionally by their students. The work of Leonard Baskin and Carol Summers is included in the collections of major museums in the United States and Europe. The fabric sculpture was done by an Iowa State  University colleague, a close friend of Judy’s and mine. The glass art was done by an undergraduate I taught in Shakespeare, and who was taught Materials Science Engineering by another colleague and neighborhood friend. The ceramic sculpture comes from Jeff Reich who,  with his wife, Farraday Newsome, formed Indigo Street Pottery in Mesa.

Cost: $15 {for the catered lunch}

SIGN-UP IS REQUIRED. Complete the following form.

Remembrance Jewelry

Remembrance Jewelry

  • Rio Verde Community Center, Art Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This session is about collecting.  What do you collect?

Hosts: Toni Lowden and Nancy Renaut

Have you ever thought about why you kept this particular shell or stone or pin of your mothers’? Perhaps it was a coin from a trip to Rome that you can’t let go of.  Maybe it’s a particular memory that comes with a piece. Maybe it’s the energy of the person that had it before you. Everyone has a reason for why they collect some special thing. What emotion does the piece provoke?  How can you express this feeling in a piece that is special to you?

We challenge you to sit down and write a little paragraph about why you were bringing this special piece to the class to make it into something that you will wear. Perhaps you want to carry the energy of the person that the piece reminds you of, Is it to remember someone who wore it before in a different form, or is it that piece you collected on your anniversary trip to the beach. Everybody has a reason. What is yours?

Nancy Renaut and Toni Lowden will guide you through this process. Please bring your written paragraph to the class to share at the beginning because that’s what this is all about.  Working and inspiring each other and making something memorable.

PS don’t forget to bring your special piece back with you in the fall when you return.

If you are away for the summer, please remember to bring a piece back with you.

Please email Nancy with questions. Click here.

What to bring: Please bring the special piece you wish to transform.

Supplies Provided by Host: Beads, jewels, jewelry wire and all the tools you will need.

Cost (including supply fees): $125. Please bring your payment to the class or Zelle your payment to 630.294.3378.

Size: Limited to 8 Participants

The Art of Drawing

  • Rio Verde Community Center: Art Room (map)

Host: Kari Hogden

Every Monday until April 14th

Drawing is the most important building block of all art! Just as we all learn to speak and walk, we are all capable of drawing. Kari will clear away impediments that keep you from exploiting this natural potential. There are short demonstrations and lessons to illustrate the focus of each class. You will learn:

How to see like an artist; How to draw and paint what you see and the knowledge to perfect that image; Learn to depict shape, form and volume; How to depict space and proportion; Understand perspective; How to understand positive and negative shapes; Learn about light, shade and tonal values; Learn how to depict rhythm and movement; How to be more imaginative.

Each artist will choose their own subject matter. Sketching and painting between classes will be encouraged but not mandatory. You will always receive feedback on your work, if desired.

Experienced artists will find that this class will rekindle their love of drawing and help them work in new ways to achieve their goals- such as drawing in preparation for painting. Painters are welcome to use paint as their main medium. The class will offer an atmosphere for creative expression, learning and fun.

Supplies to Bring:
2B pencils; The Generals Sketch and Wash pencil; Kneaded eraser; Pink eraser; Black fine point sharpie marker; Small soft artist’s brush for wetting and diffusing some of the marks made by The General’s pencil; Water Container.

Water Media Studio

This is an invitation to all water lovers to the start of the 2024-25 season. This is not a water drinking group but a water painting group. Although we have been known to put our brush into the wrong glass or cup while creating a masterpiece.

We will begin the season with discussing what NEW products you are using. We plan to feature a subject each week to share our experiences with each other. Jackie Kingsbury, our host, will bring new books and some gadgets for creating trees and effects. We will be making creating cards with the tools or by doing your own thing on the cards. Our goal is to create and encourage new members to our group. Bring a friend or neighbor! Supplies for cards will be provided. You only need your paints and a brush.

Beginners are encouraged to join us as we all learn together. Our motto is to let the water do the work. Sometimes we help the water along with sponges, saran wrap, gesso, salt or tape.

NOV 1st / What’s in your bag? Supply lists and resources will be discussed. Bring what you have including your favorite tool or latest purchase. Tombow Pens will be used to create note cards while we chat.

Coming Up:
NOV 8th / Color wheels and washes Subject: sunsets
NOV 22nd / Topic: brush strokes
NOV 29th / Topic : texture Subject: rocks or mountains
DEC 6th / Topic: center of interest Subject: flowers
DEC 13th / Topic: water Subject: waterfalls, lakes or streams
