Each artist will choose their own subject matter. Sketching and painting between classes will be encouraged but not mandatory. You will always receive feedback on your work, if desired.

Experienced artists will find that this class will rekindle their love of drawing and help them work in new ways to achieve their goals- such as drawing in preparation for painting. About Kathy

I have been working artistically all my life. Blending formal art school instruction with many self-taught techniques, I have strived to depict Nature’s beauty in my paintings when I was younger; now, intuitive, impressionistic, abstract mixed media ignites my drive to paint and need to be creative. I enjoy navigating through the many stages of a painting and find the abstract intuitive style works best for me.
I am a certified Zentangle teacher. I have won awards from the Camelback Gallery juried art shows, awards from the Fountain Hills juried art shows multiple years, and recently I've received "Juried Member" from the Sonoran Art League.

How Artists Use Symbols in Their Work

Docent: Nancy Feiring

Look at art from different times and places while you learn to decipher symbols that were understood by people living at the time the artwork was created. Docent Nancy Feiring will help us discover symbols in art that are used to teach, to warn and to inspire!

  • Rio Verde Community Center: Art Room (map)

Host: Kari Hogden

Every Monday until April 14th

Drawing is the most important building block of all art! Just as we all learn to speak and walk, we are all capable of drawing. Kari will clear away impediments that keep you from exploiting this natural potential. There are short demonstrations and lessons to illustrate the focus of each class. You will learn:

How to see like an artist; How to draw and paint what you see and the knowledge to perfect that image; Learn to depict shape, form and volume; How to depict space and proportion; Understand perspective; How to understand positive and negative shapes; Learn about light, shade and tonal values; Learn how to depict rhythm and movement; How to be more imaginative.

Painters are welcome to use paint as their main medium. The class will offer an atmosphere for creative expression, learning and fun.

Supplies to Bring:
2B pencils; The Generals Sketch and Wash pencil; Kneaded eraser; Pink eraser; Black fine point sharpie marker; Small soft artist’s brush for wetting and diffusing some of the marks made by The General’s pencil; Water Container.

Special Event: Waterworks Studio
Feb
14
9:30 AM09:30

Special Event: Waterworks Studio

Host: Linda Berck

VAL Artist Linda Berck will be teaching a special watercolor workshop. Linda’s class is for all levels of artists.

Linda believes that a painting should show the freedom of the brush and colors, not to copy exactly, but to interpret what you see or feel. Her works are more impressionistic and a bit abstract.

In keeping with this, Linda will show her technique for “Watercolor Outside OF THE BOX” . We will have free flowing colors without using a pencil plan……using brush work to create basic shapes and using our shapes to create a subject. This is a loose style very much like impressionistic to abstract . Pens or colored pencils will be the final touch.

Focus: Impressionistic shapes

Supplies to bring: Your brushes, paints, paper and support board. Paper should be 140# good quality watercolor paper. Hobby Lobby and Jerry’s Artarama has sheets of paper or blocks of paper. Look for Arches or Fabriano. Jackie Kingsbury will have extras for sale if you have trouble gathering materials.

Cost: $35 for the 3-hour class.

Payment Instructions: Bring cash or a check with you to class. Please make your check out to Linda Berck.

To Register: Email Jackie Kingsbury (click here)

About the Host, by the Host, Linda Berck:
Art is my happy place. When I’m working on a drawing or painting I am transported to another world.  In this crazy world we live in sometimes we need to escape.  I love to paint in oils, draw in colored pencils, play in clay.

The Art of Drawing

  • Rio Verde Community Center: Art Room (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Recommended Textbooks: Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson / new or used on Amazon,

Cost: $25.00. Punch cards are available for purchase to use for any class, 5 punch card is $115. and 10 punch card is $225.. These will be good through the 2024-‘25 season.

Payment Instructions: Pay by check or cash in person. You can also pay by Venmo or Zelle.
